Artist Romanie-Jade Tulloch

Romanie-Jade Tulloch, a 24-year-old makeup artist, combines her love of makeup and art to create mind-boggling optical illusions that will make you do a double take. Her Instagram account, @cakefacerj, features all of her makeup looks, which often employ bright colors and bold lines. She hopes to inspire young people to be creative and take risks with their makeup.

Tulloch said she officially started doing makeup with the hopes of becoming a freelance makeup artist.

Tulloch was home educated by her mom, then studied fine arts in college for two years.

Since she’s also always been into makeup, her transition into using cosmetics was natural. She experimented with many unique eyeshadow looks. She taught herself how to do makeup by watching YouTube tutorials. She even has her own YouTube channel where she shares beauty hauls, makeup tutorials and reviews.

She soon decided to combine her love of art and makeup, using her face a canvas.

She started posting mesmerizing works she drew on herself on Instagram. "I didn’t have enough makeup to test my skills out on other people," she said. Her art has since gotten a lot of attention. Her Instagram account has garnered over 90,000 followers. A lot of her looks draw from realism. She even has a second Instagram account, @_rj_art, where she posts some of her paintings.

They often include lots of bright colors and bold lines. Now she calls herself a "self-taught Picasso." Tulloch hopes her work will inspire people to use art in makeup more often.

Romanie-Jade Tulloch from Nottingham is a self-taught makeup artist, known for creating unbelievable looks that play tricks on the viewers eye.

The talented influencer studied fine art at college for two years but opted out of university to pursue her dream career to become a full-time YouTube and beauty influencer.

Known as ‘cakefacerj’ on social media to her 400,000 followers – she can spend up to sixteen hours to warp her face with make-up.

One of her most recent look was inspired by a kitchen blender, and she spent hours painting the quirky illusion onto her face.

She said: ‘My surroundings inspire me, I can be walking through the park and see a pond and that is enough for me to give it a go on my face.

‘I like to step out of my comfort zone and try anything and everything, it might be Where’s Wally on my face or a food blender.’

She went on: ‘I wanted to show people that you can use makeup to do so much more, it doesn’t always have to be to make yourself look pretty.’

The make up artist explained that it usually takes her on average five hours per look.

She continued: ‘I always leave my mouth until last so I can snack throughout.

‘Once I am in the zone, I find it hard to get out so it never really feels like a long time when doing the looks.’

She revealed she often dedicated days to complete her look, saying: ‘The longest I have spent on one illusion was 13 hours as I tried to create an Avengers themed look.

Romanie-Jade now boasts over 400k followers on Instagram and uploads an array of unique looks daily.

After spending two years studying fine art at college, she decided to take a risk and follow her dreams to become a makeup artist, rather than go to university.

She added: ‘I had the option to go to university, but I wanted to get stuck in with starting my career in art straight away.

She said: ‘I went on a self-employment course to become a freelance makeup artist, and in this time my page blew up and I went from 3000 followers to 16,000 in a week.

‘I took the plunge and use the loan I received from Princess Trust to buy studio equipment to become a full-time beauty influencer as I realised, I can earn money doing what I love.’

Keen to stand out from the industry, she started to experiment with unusual eye make up illusions.

She said: ‘I recognised a gap in the market, other pages were posting mainly contouring and smokey eyes, so I decided to switch it up and be arty with my looks.’

She went on: ‘A small percentage of people can be negative, but on the whole, I’ve had a really positive response and I’ve gained a large following since my looks stared trending which I’m so grateful for.’
